Video/TV Productions Details

This video is the result of many years collecting and researching material and attempts to capture the atmosphere of a large institution which once employed over 1000 staff.

Some of those employees share their memories reflecting on their own personal experiences both in their own departments but mainly in their involvement with the social and recreational activities of the hospital.

The negative aspects of institutional care are accepted and well documented. However the accounts in this video deliberately reflect the positive and enjoyable aspects of institutional life from the point of view of the staff.

It is also a tribute to the vast majority of staff who were good, hardworking and dedicated people who contributed to the care of people with mental illness in North Wales for 150 years.

The video marks the end of an era of care which will probably never be repeated and is therefore of important historical significance.

'A Question of Balance'
During 1995 the producer, Medwen Roberts spent a number of weeks at the North Wales Hospital before commencing filming. The original tapes have been donated to us and we are hoping to use some of the material in our next production.

During this period, Medwen also produced a documentary film for S4C entitled 'Yn ôl i Ddinbych'. The film focused on the development of the 'Ruthin Housing Project' after the closure of Pool Park Hospital.

In November 2003 a film company from Manchester spent 2 days filming at the hospital. Ex members of staff who were interviewed were - Clwyd Wynne, Dai Bryn Jones, John D Williams, Arthur Davies and Cllr David Jones.

Pictured with Dai and Clwyd is the series presenter, Jo Blythe. Apparently she can be seen regularly on Granada TV reading the weather reports.
